Fleabag is about a lot of things, but one of the core messages is the exploration of this idea. I didn’t truly grasp the power of that sentiment until this show came into my life. My father claims that all of human innovation is about sex, that we attempt to accumulate money, power, status, things - just for sex. No, instead it’s the validation that someone wants you, wants to see you in your rawest, most animalistic form, that drives so much of what we do. Evolution isn’t perfect but this core driver of life’s continuation has been honed pretty well over the last, give or take, 4 billion years (sorry pandas, you’re the exception.) But that’s not the core of what drives humans, with our crippling need for social belonging, to enjoy sex. In order for us and all other life forms to reproduce, we have to want to have sex. Has there ever been a better way to describe the experience of sex? Sex feels good, or at least it should, that’s the point. The moment you realize someone wants your body. The performance of it, the awkwardness of it, the drama of it. “I’m not obsessed with sex, I just can’t stop thinking about it.
